A CONVERSATION ON DIVERSITY
in Knox County

7 p.m. Tuesday, June 23
at the Knox County Educational Service Center

After the election of President Barack Obama, many pundits hailed the advent of a "post-racial" era. But is that really the case? What is life like in Knox County for residents who are identified with a minority group as a result of race, religion, ethnicity, sexual preference, gender identity, or national origin?

A Conversation on Diversity in Knox County will be the focus of an event at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 23 at the Knox County Educational Service Center, located behind the Knox County Career Center at 308 Martinsburg Road in Mount Vernon.

The evening will celebrate the richness that differences in race, religion, culture, and lifestyles bring to Knox County. At the same time, it will explore ways that individuals and institutions can improve the quality of life for residents of all backgrounds.

Sponsored by the Knox County Democratic Women, the gathering will be the second of four community forums exploring the ways that issues in the national spotlight impact life on the local level.

Karen Boyd, ACSW, LISW, Chair, Department of Social Work at Mount Vernon Nazarene University will moderate the discussion. Ric Sheffield, Associate Provost and Associate Professor of Sociology and Legal Studies at Kenyon College, will introduce the conversation.

A resource panel consisting of individuals representing diversity in Knox County has been assembled. Local residents from North and South America, Europe, Asia and Africa have been invited along with representatives from the Christian, Jewish and Muslim faiths. In addition, members of the Knox County Gay Straight Alliance will also participate in the discussion.

The event is free and open to the public. Residents of all backgrounds are encouraged to attend.
